Wood St businessmen began a free parking plan in their shopping district offering no charge on Friday nights and Saturdays in the St Marys Church lot. Nine Wood St stores between State and Bradford Sts sponsor the effort to create a one stop shopping area.
National attention grows as the Cutter Spar readies for an Arctic voyage to find the deepest channel along North America’s northern shore. Coast Guard buoy tenders Cactus Cowship Laurel and Evergreen will support from May to November with 61 crew aboard and civilian observers. Bramble and Star will accompany the Spar on this historic search.
The School Committee will study a by law change after the resignation of elementary teacher Miss Joan R Burke who plans marriage this summer. The present rule removes married teachers from tenure, creating a yearly appointment system, and the group split on whether to pursue a change at the next meeting. Superintendent Edward J Fitzgerald will inform Miss Burke of developments and advise she may seek another position. Continued on page 3.
Robert H R Miller of Dixon Corp will join a four man team of US executives to assess technical aid in engineering quality control and distribution under the European Productivity Agency. Dr Norman J Jensen of Vikon Tile and RE Letsche of Heinz join with the mission directed by the State Department. They will conduct seminars tour Greek factories and study business practices before returning June 10. Miller has led Dixon into large scale textile lubricating parts and plastics production.
The School Houses Committee urged abandoning Burton, Hayman and Taft Schools, with Burton to close at year end, and proposed janitorial consolidations to cut costs. The plan awaits full committee action and state education approval before disposal, while Dr Hubert Holdsworth objects to health menacing claims and suggests alternative use.
The Bristol Post Office will be closed tomorrow due to failure of Congress to pass an appropriation. Only special delivery mail will be handled. general delivery to homes and businesses will pause while lobby remains open and boxholders may fetch mail. The Saturday schedule for arrivals and departures holds, with this closure expected as a temporary measure.
Peter Natale, a high school senior at BSHLS, received the Junior Chamber of Commerce Junior Achievement Award at a Jaycees meeting at the Harriet Bradford Inn. Natale, an honor student and Hi Y leader, plays football and baseball and serves as Student Council vice president. Carmine Cirillo nominated him. Natale is the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Natale of 292 State St.
Tenite Little League hosts annual open house at the YMCA for King Philip players newcomers and parents tonight at 7 30. Speakers include Vincent Securo of Guilford Conn former Bristol baseball coach and Artie Panga Bristol Senior High School coach. Twenty graduates will receive pins and certificates. First tryouts set for tomorrow at 1 pm at the Community field boys bring birth certificates.
