Adm Arleigh Burke told Sen Pastore that two US Navy destroyers will visit Bristol on the Fourth of July. Previously the Fourth of July Celebration Committee had been advised that only one ship would visit town on the Fourth.

Firemen Parade Expected To Draw Over 1000 Participants

More than 1 000 people and various apparatus are expected to join the Firemen Memorial observance led by Fire Chief Oscar A. Rishe. Bristol volunteers and nearby towns will participate, with the Rhode Island State Firemen Chiefs Clubs also taking part. The granite monument at the Burnside Memorial Building lawn commemorates deceased Bristol firemen. The Firemen's Memorial and Welfare Committee funded two thirds of the cost and aims to raise the balance at its May 29 Firemen's Ball at the Midway. Graves will be decorated with memorial markers for each company.

Specifications of Proposed Post Office Made Public

The 100 year old Hope Street post office shown its end as bids are invited for an 8600 square foot federal style building in Bristol. A 60 day bid deadline is set with an August start if zoning of the State Street site is approved. The plan blends colonial design with local architecture and includes a 72 by 120 foot footprint, a rear 20 foot platform, separate postal offices, fluorescent lighting, and a partial basement for heating. Ground breaking may come after town approval and once the new Bristol post office is ready for use.
