Briton 18 41th Channel Swimmer Temme Opens 1927 Swim

E H Temme a 22 year old London clerk began the 1927 crossing from Cape Gris Nez to England. He landed between Dover and Folkestone at 3 30 pm after swimming the English Channel in 14 hours 20 minutes, the 11th successful crossing. His time beat Gertrude Ederle's mark by two minutes.

Woman Slain in City Hall Subway Washroom

In a City Hall Brooklyn Manhattan station washroom a woman named Emma Weigand was shot and died as thousands passed nearby. The killer fled, a .38 bullet was recovered, and motive remains unclear. Diamonds stolen from salesman at local railroad station

Boston Aug 5 Ralph Ohrenberger of West Roxbury died after being overcome by carbon monoxide while in his car in the garage. He pressed the horn while losing consciousness, a neighbor heard the horn and called the fire department. Firemen arrived and attempted to rescue him but he died shortly after.

Dessau Germany August 5 Corne lius Edzard and Johann Risticz landed after a 62 hour 23 minute 8 second nonstop flight in a Junkers W 33 breaking the world endurance record. Lightning strikes barn kill four in Massachusetts

A tobacko barn in Springfield was struck by lightning injuring about a half dozen and killing four workers including Green fourteen and Albert seventeen. John Griffith thirty of Springfield died.
