Reports from London Paris and cities worldwide describe thousands marching against the Sacco Vanzetti verdict. In New York subway blasts spurred police and private guards and an arrest as detectives pursue multiple theories of the explosions.
New Haven August 7 By Associated Press two men and three women arrested for distributing English and Italian literature calling for a general strike to protest the Sacco and Vanzetti executions. Police recalled on vacation to guard post offices as three officers named a special guard.
A scarlet fever case was found at Bridgeport Hospital involving Albert Underfer of Stratford. He was hospitalized and later returned home in the emergency ambulance. Officials fear possible spread and review hospital infection controls to determine if the patient contracted the fever there.
The Boston Central Labor Union refused to sanction a sympathetic strike urged by the Workers Communist party in support of Sacco and Vanzetti. After a two hour session the resolutions committee withdrew the measure and directed a conference with the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee.
A national march on Boston is organized by the Sacco Vanzetti defense committee with plans for a somber vigil at the state capitol and Charlestown jail on the execution night. The statement urges 100000 Americans to come to Boston by train boat or car and to demonstrate with black armbands and steadfast faith that justice for Sacco and Vanzetti must prevail.
Federal Agent Webster and Boatswain Sandersin were killed when rum runners attacked the coast guard patrol boat near Fort Lauderdale. Two guards were seriously wounded and a third crewmember was shot in the back as the attackers fired from a captured ram boat and tried to escape. Commander Beckwith Jordan led reinforcements about 42 miles east of the scene.
Proprietor Bessie Harriston of a George Street grocery store reported to the detective bureau yesterday morning that the store at 289 George Street had been entered. Seven dollars were taken from the cash register and 850 dollars from her bedroom in the rear of the store.
The Curtiss Field report states Old Glory will depart around 5 p.m. with Lloyd W Bertaud and James D Hill as pilots. A Cleveland test flight planned for Wednesday could lead to a full check-up and a fresh 40 mile time plan, depending on favorable near wind conditions.
Two young women Eisie Pierce 21 and Florence Williams 73 escaped their cell by a third floor window and reached the courtyard before a bank watchman sighted them and alerted authorities. They had been confined on a theft charge and gave Stamford addresses though police say their home is Brooklyn New York.
Andy Rush, a mainstay of the no run game, pitched and won two games for the Bears against New Haven at Newfield Park. He allowed three hits in the first game as Chicago won 4 to 0, then helped the Bears come from behind to win the second 4 to 9 before a record crowd.
Six people escaped a launch when it struck a submerged Cow Rocks rock near Shippan Point Stamford and sank in Long Island Sound. Daniel Mahoney of Stamford Mrs J T Whalen of Greenwich and New York, her five year old daughter Barbara, Luther Phillipa of Plainfield New Jersey, and John Sexton, a Dutchman, were rescued by Jesse A B Smith of Darien and others from the Stamford Yacht Club.
In Buffalo on August 7 Associated Press reports Vice President Dawes and British leaders pledged friendship after Geneva debates. Dawes argued self preservation binds English speaking peoples, saying Great Britain and the United States would not enter a naval arms race, while ceremonies celebrated the new U S Canada peace bridge with royal and political figures present.
London August 7 by Associated Press The Daly Mail reports United States Shipping Board liner American Trader docked Sunday from the United States with Mary White a 34 year old stewardess held as a prisoner in her cabin since Friday on captain orders She is charged with involvement in the death of Lewis Fisher a crew member poisoned by acid while asleep Fisher’s death and the resulting silence among passengers and crew were kept quiet while British authorities claim jurisdiction and American authorities seek to take White back to the United States.
Ballot results show 899 to 240 against removing WICC with recent Telegram Post ballots still counting. Positional items include power increase 208 in favor 850 opposed and wave length 192 in favor 940 opposed with 307 able to tune out and 54 unable, plus 386 in favor of programs and 899 opposed to programs. Remarks praise some New York stations but prefer Bridgeport reception overall.

Washington Aug 7. Military and official Washington prepared to pay a flat salute to Major General Leonard Wood. His burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery beside Spanish American War comrades. The body will arrive Tuesday morning, escorted by widow and military guards, with Third Cavalry and other units.
Rapid City August 7 By Associated Press The death of Leonard Wood creates a pressing need for a new American representative in the troubled Philippines. President Coolidge may name Carmín Thompson, who led an investigation there, as Wood’s successor, though Henry L. Stimson is also under consideration. The issue comes as U S policy at Manila faces strain amid independence agitation and the recent Mexico and Nicaragua posts changes.
Raymond Golinsky age 9 was killed near his home at 9 45 this morning after being struck by a car driven by Henry Mano of 23 Orchard Street New London. He reportedly jumped into the road from a rock by the roadside. His crash injuries were fatal, and the medical examiner Pendleton will rule on the case while Mano remains held in $500 awaiting findings.
James Reiling, 17, of North Main Street, reportedly walked 76 1 2 miles in 24 hours with a 25 pound pack to claim a local hiking record. His manager George Jasmin of Warren Street announced the feat as the best by a local hiker. Reiling started Saturday at 1 pm and finished at 2 pm Sunday, as a crowd gathered at Main Street and Falfield Avenue.
Southampton England August 7 Associated Press Captain F T Courtney British aviator tested the whale boat, promising a flight to New York when weather and wireless gear improve. He flew about 45 minutes with Downer and two experts, finding the wireless equipment unsatisfactory though overall performance was satisfactory. Weather over the Atlantic showed improvement and Courtney hinted at a possible Tuesday departure, if conditions permit.
Latest reports say the quake was fairly sharp but caused little damage. A small number of injuries occurred from bricks and falling chimneys. A light aftershock at 11 this morning appears inconsequential.
