Chicago August 4. Frank Lowden former Illinois governor and frequent presidential candidate withdraws from the race as new couriers seek to manipulate sentiment for clemency and justice for Sacco-Vanzetti. Ford endorses Hoover as the logical Republican candidate. Page 1 and 9.
New York August 4 The New York World reports RCA will within a month deploy a wireless system called beam that will photographically reproduce messages between New York and London ten times faster than current methods. Tests suggest it will soon render the wireless code dot-and-dash signals obsolete.
Hartford Aug. Associated Press reports the state board of finance and control approved $1,000 raises for four officials. Higgin(s) moves from 9,000 to 10,000 as Public Utilities chair. Robbins B. Broeckel, William H. Blodgett, and John A. Macdonald each gain from 6,000 to 9,000 or 10,000 as noted. Appointments include Ellett H. Platt to agriculture publicity and Robert Sinclair to car lot inspector. Also authorizes Saybrook land subdivision to NYNH&H RR, refunds Bloomfield railroad bond, and delays departmental education salary schedule.
John H. Murphy, a clerk in the office of Postmaster Arthur F. Connor, will become foreman of the registry division of the Bridgeport office starting Monday. The new post carries a salary increase of 200 a year. William Cronin will succeed Murphy as clerk in the post master's office at his current pay. Theodore Langenham will act as cashier while William T. Meyer serves as acting postmaster.

A Bridgeport man, Harry Smith, 35, was shot and killed during the annual Knights of Pythias outing at Hanover Park, Meriden. James Pickett, 35, of 8 Wellington St., Boston, a former Bridgeporter and Smith’s roommate, was arrested on the scene and held without bail. Wounding also involved Richard Sterks, alias Richard W. Wil 40, of Ansonia, who is being held as a material witness. The event drew about 6,000 attendees and police credited Meriden with strong protection aiding the arrest.

In Milford, a nursemaid named Renat Reigel aged 21 attempted riding a horse loaned to her while a stable groom watched the infant. She was thrown, suffered facial and arm injuries, and was taken to Milford Hospital. The infant, later identified as Theodore Sturtz’s daughter, was found unharmed elsewhere. The groom Oscar Paul was reprimanded for swapping a horse for the infant and the incident sparked a kidnapping scare at Fort Trumbull Beach.
Fairfield August 4 Acting on complaints received during the week Prosecutor Kinella mailed letters to the Unquowa tribe No 60 LO R M and to Rev Father William J Blake pastor of St Thomas church warning future wheels and other genres of chance would be barred in Fairfield The Red Men carnival opens Saturday and their committee says it will be within the law The Unquown tribe has held carnivals for years and will consult counsel Frank L Wilder of Bridgeport with tickets noting a ten cent contribution toward an automobile purchase The prosecutor says the action covers individuals and organizations regardless of their names or affiliations The Red Men plan to proceed with carnivals while avoiding illegal gambling claims
Washington Aug 4 The United States Britain and Japan clash over cruiser limits as Geneva reports no agreement. Kellogg says failure to reach a pact now is not final and cordial U S British relations remain intact while Wilbur plans Pacific coast trip to discuss naval program with President Coolidge.
The Federal Reserve Board reduced rediscount rates to three and a half percent from four percent for all paper maturities at the New York and Boston banks effective August 5. The move follows similar cuts by Kansas City and St Louis. Market reaction muted though observers note inflation risk. President Coolidge’s statement on not seeking reelection is seen as curbing speculation.
Ballots collected from radio fans indicate strong support for removing WICQ with about four times as many backers as opponents. A total of 945 ballots were cast, showing 737 in favor and 208 opposed to removal, with many remarks criticizing the station and a few defending its value. The Federal Radio Commission will review the ballots at a Washington hearing next Tuesday.
Milford August 4 Special Correspondent Bert Acosta, pilot for Commander Byrd during the perilous New York to Paris flight attempt, will start a flying school in Milford. John H. Stelling, president of the Aircraft Corporation of America, says Acosta will teach tying and will build a hangar at Laurel Beach field of the Atrerat corporation, where an airplane plant is under construction. The Aircraft Corporation sponsored the ill fated Rena Fonck Sikorsky flight from New York to Paris. Stelling says he has been negotiating with Acosta who planned to start a flying school soon.
Police and fire crews disrupted a midnight vigil at Beach's pond near Boston Avenue Stratford, as more than 1,000 spectators waited for a reputed ghost. A cigarette sparked a tiny blaze in an icehouse, the ghost story allegedly linked to a white horse and a youth named Steve Sedor.
Arthur Hawking, 32, of Howard Court, employed by Bisse Varnish, died at Bridgeport hospital after severe burns from a turpentine tank car explosion. He was fatally burned when a high voltage line sent current through a wire he used to measure remaining turpentine, igniting the car as firefighters responded. A coroner’s report was expected.
New York Italian Republican party telegraphed President Coolidge urging intervention as Sacco and Vanzetti face execution. Boston lawyers retire, new counsel Arthur C. Hill takes over defense while governor's clemency was refused. Reports say the condemned men heard the news in Charlestown death house as Mrs Sacco visits.

Police reported a car accident at Seaside Park where the vehicle overturned twice and was demolished. Nurse Mildred Daley, nineteen, of Danbury hospital, sustained only slight injuries and received treatment at the Emergency hospital. Two other passengers escaped unharmed.
A Federal court decree orders Gillette, United Cigar Stores, and Liggett to alter distribution methods for Gillette blades. The government charged the firms used chain-store contracts to flood markets with blades at cut prices, enabling exchanges to acquire competitors’ blades below manufacturer prices and harm rival trade.
In Boston on August 4 a taxicab driver, Michael J. Birmingham, reported dynamite found by a man in the taxi. The man claimed the device came from Texas and discussed Sacco-Vanzetti. Police were alerted after the driver picked up a past passenger who mentioned the dynamite.
Arbeiderbladet, the leading Labor party organ in Norway, editorializes that the Sacco-Vanzetti Judgment violates justice. It denounces the trial as a comedy conducted in the United States, claiming American court proceedings are scandalous and that state attorneys judges and witnesses can be bought and bribed.
