New State Agriculture Commissioner Bill Passes House
A bill creating a state commissioner of agriculture won passage in the House, with Samuel Russell of Middletown leading opposition. The measure aims to consolidate duties from the Board of Agriculture under a single commissioner, set salary at 6050 a year, and establish regional offices. Proponents say it expands agricultural outreach while critics argue it weakens the existing board and its advisory role. The bill moves to the Senate for consideration next week.
