Flame-Thrower Helps Grain Sorghum Harvest
In Plainview Texas researchers at the High Plains Research Foundation tested a flame cultivator mounted on a tractor to aid harvest of grain sorghum. Dr Thomas C Longnecker led the study which used propane to heat young stalks and heads. Light rain and frost limited findings but the tests suggested potential benefits for farmers.

Researchers Find Sorghum Leaf Killing Increases Harvest Yield
Scientists report that treating sorghum to kill leaves caused rapid browning and moisture loss in grain. In three days moisture dropped from 87 to 21 percent on treated plants versus 27 percent on untreated. Harvest could start 10 to 14 days earlier. Operators estimate 200 to 500 pounds per acre saved as green leaves hinder combine performance. The foundation plans continued trials this year.
