Suburban housewives in a Texas city poll believe civilization would survive to 2000. Most expect civil defense measures to fail against nuclear attack but some see possible survival with shelters and government support.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p m today from Ilkerson Chapel for Mary Elizabeth Behrens 88 of 6 East 11th Street Brady. Burial will be in Brady Cemetery. She died Monday at Kell Hospital. Born December 18 1883 in Montgomery Alabama she lived in Brady many years. She married J M Lewen in 1890 and died in 1925. Her second husband Henry Behrens died 1951. Survived by two sons Joe Lewallen Terrell and Oran Lewallen San Angelo four daughters Annie Vance Mercedes Ora Davis Era Bessie Fletcher Fort Worth and Eula Bolinger Christoval one son Andy Lewlen died 1938 six stepchildren two sisters Mary Miller Menard and Mrs Behrens San Angelo 23 grandchildren 43 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Grandsons will be pallbearers.
A two car collision at 5 20 p m Tuesday at the intersection of Pine and South Pine Streets damaged both autos and sent Mrs M M Bradham to the hospital for a short time. Driver Robert Ricks was southbound when the crash occurred Chief Dorman Gibbs said. Mrs Bradham was later released. Estimated damage was 400 dollars. Both drivers were uninjured beyond the shock.
Sandy Fowler of Houston, son of Mr and Mrs Scott Fowler, was selected for the American Legion annual award. A Hamilton High student and athlete, he ranks varsity in football basketball and netball, serves as Sunday School class treasurer, and is praised for his grades and activities.
Police Chief Dorman Gibbs urges Brady drivers to slow down amid 31 accidents this year, noting five injuries and no deaths so far. He warns the city may top last year’s 63 wrecks, most injuries on U S 87 and on the town’s south side, despite only half the town lying there.
George J Jowers 49 died of a heart attack in Roby on Wednesday. Funeral services at 2 p m today in Wilkerson Funeral Home chapel then burial at Lohn Cemetery. Jowers of San Angelo formerly married to Mabel Lohn, survived by wife, four daughters, ten grandchildren, three brothers and seven sisters. Born in Brady September 14 1911.
The July Jubilee race meet is set for July 2 3 4 with all 145 stalls filled or reserved General Chairman Korky Steffens said the meet will be the best yet Box seat tickets are on sale from G P Kittle chairman of the Ticket Sales Committee
The Bloodmobile will visit Brady on Wednesday June 28 from 0 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Brady Lions Club sponsors the drive with co sponsors aiming to collect 72 pints, coordinated by Lions Bloodmobile chairman James Mallow.
The TSCRA Cattle Feeder Division outlines a plan to aid Southwest cattle feeding with a feed lot report for current sales and purchases. It aims to strengthen research in marketing nutrition management disease control and related fields, led by Lloyd Bergsma. North Dakota showed the only larger percentage increase in cattle on feed than Texas in April. C. W. McMillan of the American National Cattlemen's Association backs Southwest grain sorghum areas as key to growth.
Mike Nixon a University of Texas Austin student and son of Mr and Mrs E H Nixon arrived home at the start of the week He will work in the prescription department at City Drug Company this summer months offering local employment and family ties to the community
With harvest 95 percent complete McCulloch County farmers shipped about 323 grain cars gaining 763875 dollars. Wheat oats and barley yields varied from 15 to 35 bushels per acre with good weather recent weeks. Several firms in Melvin Brady and Millersview shipped large carloads totaling 195 wheat 107 oats and 21 barley cars.
Campbell Geeslin is promoted to assistant managing editor of the Houston Post. He previously edited the Houston Now Sunday supplement and served as art editor under the alias Cato. A Brady native, he studied at Columbia University and UT Austin, and has three children.
Robert W. Bob Wilson news editor of The Standard and Herald was admitted to Brady Hospital Wednesday afternoon with a virus infection. His condition was reported improved Thursday noon as he remains under weather recovery.
