Building Pipe Organ Big Job But It Will Last for Lifetime
Dallas craftsman Herman Boettcher builds and restores pipe organs for churches and institutions across the Southwest. A typical three keyboard instrument uses about 1,000 board feet of lumber and 183 relay magnets to power 1,536 acting units for tone. He rebuilt Dallas First Baptist’s organ in 1958 from an 1890 instrument, expanding to four keyboards and about 6,000 pipes. Boettcher recently finished a three keyboard organ for Lakewood Methodist Church and is enlarging a Roswell New Mexico organ from two keyboards to three. He notes organs take five to six months to build, space limits him to two at once, and that pipes from European manufactures are delicate and slow to ship. A properly maintained pipe organ can last hundreds of years. The Lakewood project runs about 1,500 pipes and cost is tied to size. A pipe organ will last hundreds of years with proper care.
