Hot weather brings Straw Hat Days in Brady with men urged to shop for new skypiece. Participating stores include Samuel's Rosenberg's The Toggery Wilensky's Penney's Perry's and John's Boot Shop.
The Santa Fe reroute around Brady Lake is complete with the first train crossing the new 3.98 mile line on Wednesday. A 40 man crew assisted, with engineers from Galveston and Temple inspecting the work. The city funded grading and drainage while Santa Fe will own the old right of way after a temporary transfer of titles. The new alignment shortens the Lomera to Eden track by 700 feet.
Dock Harris Newman 81 of Brady died at 4 50 p m Wednesday in Odessa. A blacksmith at Rochelle for years he lived on the Brownwood highway north of Brady. Born September 25 1880 in Tama Texas he married Emma Galloway July 29 1906. Funeral to be held 2 30 p m Friday at Wilkerson Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Survivors include his wife a son A W Newman of Odessa three daughters Mrs Paul Engdahl Brady Mrs Fred Rich Austin and Mrs M S Reiber Lakeland Ga two sisters Mrs M E Felps Fredericksburg and Mrs Bun Powell Austin five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Brady High's golf team led the regional tournament at Brenham after 18 holes with a 7 stroke margin finishing 325. Columbus stood second at 332 while Brady's B team posted 359 on day one.
Willie Myers, Rochelle High School assistant for two years, is promoted to head coach succeeding Kenneth Mitchell who leaves for Junction High. A Rochelle native class of 1956, Myers is Howard Payne College graduate and former track captain. Superintendent C W Thompson says they seek an assistant coach who can teach biology.
Brady's Broad Mercantile Co. one of the town's oldest businesses is in liquidation, closing after stock runs out. H. O. Broad has run the store since 1952 following his brother Edwin's death, with the firm tracing back to 1904 when founded by the Broad brothers. Patrons are invited to browse the sale and take advantage of reduced merchandise as the establishment winds down.

Karl Keller Steffens of Brady receives the Distinguished Service Award at the Chamber of Commerce annual banquet in the First Christian Church fellowship hall. He is lauded for extensive civic work including directing the Jubilee and Queen’s coronation program, with his wife Othrene and sons Craig and Kariton in Brady. Dr James H Jauncey spoke at the event.
Nine winners receive checks in a county wide poster contest sponsored by the Brady Volunteer Fire Department with city and county cooperation. The 146 entries came from all county schools. winners advance to the Hill Country Firemen’s Association district contest in Winters and then the state contest in McAllen.
Parker answers a $100,000 libel suit filed by County Judge Love Kimbrough. The San Angelo firm Upton Up ton Baker Griffis represents him and denies all allegations, demanding strict proof. Kimbrough filed March 13 after a February 6 KNEL radio statement. no trial date set.
The Kimble Menard Singing Convention will be held Sunday April 15 at London Baptist Church starting at 2 p.m. The event brings together local singers for an afternoon of performances within the community.
Mr and Mrs A P Waldrep of Brady purchase the Hall Insurance Agency at 202 East Commerce effective April 1 Clyde Hall retires as operator after 25 years but stays in the office temporarily Waldrep president of the First National Bank of Melvin also owns Waldrep Insurance in Melvin He has led Melvin Bank for 11 years and has held mayoral and chamber posts Mrs Waldrep taught in Dallas Highland Park schools 20 years and co ran Economy Auto Stores The Hall agency will stay in its present location for now with a new site to be announced later Annell Smith remains as secretary. no change in staff or future address plans
The Lohn Senior Class sponsors a political rally and production at the Lohn tabernacle this Friday night at 7 30. The public is invited to attend.
