Petition Seeks Dissolution of Rail and Water Carrier Alliances

Seats for 106,000 on Wednesday in Boston schools

Boston public schools plan to enroll 106,000 to 107,000 pupils next Wednesday with 2,000 extra accommodations. New 12 room South End school on Groton street and eight room West Roxbury school will open, plus four room Dorchester Walk Hill, 10 room East Boston Prescott street, and High School of Practical Arts in Roxbury. Additional enlargements add 850 places at Public Latin, 250 at Brighton High, and 250 at Marshall School, while 3064 teachers are hired.

Reports from Beaufort North Carolina say no loss of life occurred on Ocracoke or Portsmouth islands in Pamlico Sound during the storm. Earlier rumors of hundreds dead on Ocracoke were denied as the gale passed with little damage there. Atlantic near Portsmouth Island suffered some damage and wreckage, with debris and uprooted trees reported in Pamlico Sound.

The Woonsocket Rubber Company will start work immediately on an addition to its Alice Mill at Woonsocket Rhode Island. George Schlosser, superintendent. New York on September 5 reports a prize of forty eight thousand dollars or more for young Gravel E W Acker who must prove he has abstained absolutely from the use of paper cigarettes. The address is not given.

Workman's pick cuts off phones at Marblehead

Telephone service between Boston and North Shore resorts was nearly severed yesterday after an Italian laborer drove his pick through a conduit with 180 pairs of wires in a Marblehead cable.

Laborer’s pick causes major Boston north shore telephone outage

A laborer digging a conduit inadvertently cut trunk lines between Boston and Salem and disrupted about 100 telephones in Phillips Beach and Clifton. Emergency linemen replaced the damaged cable, restoring service by morning. The Italian worker denied causing the break as officials hurried to fix the widespread telegraph and phone outages along the north shore.
