Record Fog Holds Up Big Liners

For days heavy fog has delayed and tied up shipping as mariners report the protracted haze beginning last Thursday. Only a brief clearing Sunday afternoon offered relief while harbor navigation remained difficult at night. no accidents were reported.

Laconia Delayed Amid Fog Quiet Port Arrivals

The Cunard liner Laconia with 2300 passengers, bound from Liverpool and Queenstown, was delayed after radioing a late arrival and remained seven miles east of Boston light in fog at 2 PM. Docking slipped to this morning as most arrivals were limited to regular coasting steamers.

Colonial steamer fleet reaches Vineyard Sound battleground

Peter H. Crowell of Malden and Joseph W. Fordney bound from Baltimore anchor in Vineyard Sound with steamers Newton and Suffolk after passing Cape Henry. The two others continued, while the captains of Crowell and Fordney chose to drop anchor.

Finger Amputated After Ring Jams Fire-Pressed Machine

Peter Kushankus of 89 B street South Boston lost the little finger on his right hand in a strange accident at the Compressed Steel Shafting Company 398 Dorchester avenue. His finger became embedded in a five pound steel ring and could not be released by coworkers. Doctors at City Hospital amputated after breaking the ring and lengthy efforts failed to free the finger.
