In New York, a landmark pitching duel ended with Philadelphia taking a 1-0 win over New York after faults and late pressure. Mathewson struck out five. Plank fanned six. Time 2h 22m. Umpires Connolly Rigler Klem Egan.
The Boston Post describes Knowles programme events with an auto tour from Parkman Bandstand to Harvard and Cambridge venues. A 3 pm medical examination by Dr Dudley A Sargent and evening receptions at the Cambridge Y M C A follow, plus morning calls on Governor Foss and Mayor Fitzgerald.

Washington October 8. Aigrettes and similar plumage forbidden by the new tariff law must be removed from arriving travellers hats and turned to customs before leaving the wharf. Secretary McAdoo ruled after reports that an aigrette was snatched from a woman in New York. Officials denied the report and promised minimal inconvenience to travelers with courtesy to women bringing aigrettes.
Governor Foss appoints Secretary J Frank Chase of the New England Watch and Ward Society as Massachusetts delegate to the international parity congress opening in Detroit in early December.
Philadelphia October 8 The Giants won a tense contest after Strunk was upheld at the plate by umpire Connolly amid an Athletics crowd. Plank and the pitchers traded holds as the ninth ended without a tally and the game remained one run apart until the finish.
Newburyport reports Mrs. Edward Welch died at Anna Jacques Hospital from injuries suffered when struck by an automobile yesterday. The car was driven by Joseph Farley with owner Lowell J. Foote accompanying, both men residents of the city.
In Philadelphia on a tense afternoon Mathewson outdueled Eddie Plank in a 3 to 0 ten inning victory for New York. The duel marked a legendary chapter in the World Series as the aging Mackmen faltered behind their ace and the fading favorite preserved the title chase.
