Death Takes Aity Evarts
Maxwell Evarts, 51, general counsel for the Southern Pacific railroad, died at his Windsor Vermont home after three years of ill health following intestinal surgery. He was the youngest son of former U.S. Senator William M. Evarts of Vermont, survived by his widow and five children. Funeral set for Friday at 11 in St Paul’s Episcopal Church, burial at Ascutney Cemetery. Pallbearers to be announced.

Twelve Ton Sphinx Arrives for Penn Museum Display
A twelve ton sphinx of Rameses III arrived at Philadelphia harbor aboard the Schilturn tramp steamer and will be installed in the University of Pennsylvania museum. The granite statue spans twelve feet, depicts a lion body with a kingly face, and ranks as the largest Egyptian relic sent to the United States aside from Cleopatra’s Needle and the Central Park obelisk.

Confesses to Murder of Two Women in California
Burr Harris, an African American man, confessed to killing Mrs. Rebecca Gay of Los Angeles and another woman, Mrs. M. Haskins of Compton. He claimed arson at the Coronado Hotel and poisoning a woman, saying he acted from an uncontrollable urge to kill. Harris had been acquitted previously in the Haskins case.
