Ask For Rate Cut On Refrigerator Cars By Fruit Merchants
Sweeney Lynes Co and Boston fruit merchants urged a rate reduction for refrigerator cars at a hearing before Interstate Commerce Commissioner Clements. They sought a rebate on the Norfolk to Boston rate of 51 per car in 1908 versus 41.2 today. Witness F W Ellis of Armour Refrigerating Co said packers control the business and railroads merely furnish cars, with rates set by packers and railroad approval largely perfunctory. He noted the business is very profitable due to large risk.

Massachusetts Senatorial Crisis and White Letters Debate
Governor-elect Foss responds to Mr. White questioning the White letters while urging the public to express views on the United States senator race. He criticizes Lodge and the Republican majority, urges continued agitation, and cites a November letter comparing Republican misrule to a monopoly. He contrasts Foss and Draper with Lodge, Fitzgerald, and a four-person committee, and notes Lodge support from Springfield Republicans and Democratic uncertainty ahead of the nomination.
