Chester M. Goodwin walked into the Danvers police station and confessed to shooting Bertram W. Gallaway to death Friday night. He claimed self-defense saying Gallaway attacked him over jealousy toward Mrs. Gallaway and threatened to throw him out of the house.
Somerville’s Robert Luce issues an open letter to Governor-elect Eu N Foss urging a public debate before December 15. Luce, former chairman of the cost of living commission, argues tariff costs are not the direct cause of rising prices and suggests discussing the issue.
Goodwin spends two nights in Topsfield woods four miles from town after Gallaway death. He survived on barberries and frozen apples. He planned to give himself up yesterday but lacked courage and advice. He is to be arraigned for a preliminary hearing tomorrow in Salem District Court before Judge George B. Sears. Night Officer Blodgett alerted by Frank Dicinnell of Ferncroft station. Goodwin is brought to surrender with John Collins present.
In a letter Luce rejects defending Lodge, calling the issue one of principle and constitutional procedure. Foss, asked about a debate, said he would meet Luce but declined to say whether he would argue with the Somerville Republican in tomorrow’s session. Continued on Page 2.
Michael McInerney and Patrick Martin of Lowell were seriously hurt when the Montreal Flyer began to pull out and cars separated as they moved from a coach to the smoker.
Between train cars two men were hurled and barely escaped being crushed by the rear section. Brakemen pulled the injured to safety before the second section passed and stopped after breaking a draw post. Mc Inerney suffered three broken ribs. Martin had head and body injuries and steam burns.
In Newton on Boylston street two men fought a 200 yard running duel with razors. One man’s weapon broke and he was killed within moments. The survivor required over an hour of surgery at Newton Hospital and is charged with murder.
Antonio De Filippo 21 was killed in a razor duel with Giuseppi Di Maio 32. Di Maio crawled to the Muldoon house after being wounded. Dr. George West, medical examiner, aided police in quick identification and arrest. Five friends fled to Oak Hill. three were later jailed for hearing in Newton Court.
In Cork the Redmond and O Brien factions clashed during a procession. Police blocked the march through an O Brien quarter as fights erupted and about 80 people were injured.
A large Dublin gathering greeted Joseph Devlin returning from America with torchlights bands and fireworks. Devlin spoke on College Green praising his mission, as John Redmond and John Dillon commended his work and urged support. O'Brien reportedly has 125000 and plans to contest 24 seats including Cork City East Cork and West Mayo with three entries.
Rabbi Herman H. Rubinovitz was inducted as spiritual head of Temple Mish at a synagogue service crowded with members and leaders.
Passengers and officers on incoming steamers and other craft reported a fierce northeast gale that has battered the coast for 36 hours. A blinding snow storm off New England lasted 10 hours, hindering navigation, while a 50 mile an hour gale raged.
The Prince Arthur with 85 aboard faced a long snow storm after leaving Yarmouth. Heavy seas swept decks and wreckage was lost as officers steered through the gale. Passengers stayed in cabins for safety. At midship the danger intensified.
Hattie Le Blanc, 17, faces a life trial for the murder of Clarence F. Glover a Waltham laundryman in Cambridge. Judge Daniel Webster Bond will preside under a new one judge rule, the first Middlesex county murder trial with single jurist.
After the indictment is read a jury will be drawn from 194 talesmen from across the county. Spectators may not attend today and must wait until tomorrow to hear the proceedings, as seating is limited by the number of talesmen.
