Witty fragments and quips flood a busy readers page

A collage of light notes from a newspaper page includes political barbs about Blaine and Burchard, a quip about an eagle attack on a Long Island boy, fashion chatter on round waists, a ship in dry dock stating it will not enter water until coal barges are removed, and humorous exchanges about club life after marriage and a photographer guiding a customer.

Revered Burchard speech spurs political sectarian tension

An Andover letter criticizes Rev. Samuel D. Burchard for branding the Democratic Party with rum Romanism and rebellion at a Delmonico dinner. It argues the charge also targets Republicans and Blaine, urges restraint, and condemns religious and political bigotry rising after the election.

Ancient Attitudes to Deaf Mutes in Greece and Rome

In antiquity poverty and weakness were despised, and deaf mute children faced harsh treatment. Aristotle argued congenital deaf mutes could not be taught, a view common in classical times. Romans exposed deaf mutes to death by Tiber, with few saved by guardians or parental concealment. Later, some rights emerged for capable individuals, while Egyptians and Persians reportedly educated deaf mutes with hieroglyphic writing aiding learning.

Life in New York’s feverish energy grips a European observer

An American expatriate recalls arriving in New York after Europe and finding the city’s high tempo, dry climate, and electric and transit activity provoke intense nerves and sleeplessness. He compares Baltimore and Dresden, notes the omnibuses and elevated railways, and cites a captain who could not drink in New York as he could in Liverpool.
