Will Renew Graft Probe In Albany

State investigator John A. Hennessy rushed to Albany after the New York mayoralty fight to renew graft probes in state departments. He arranged a meeting with Governor Glynn for next Monday to present evidence and propose methods to ferret out corruption. The governor pledged to pursue any substantiated criminal charges.

Cow Hospital Lost by Fire at Brighton Stock Yards

A two alarm blaze at the State Animal Hospital in the Brighton stock yards at 10 a m destroyed the building valued at about 5000 dollars and killed four cows under observation for tuberculosis. District Chief Madison suspects arson and ordered an investigation after workers saw smoke and could not save the cattle. The hospital, used by the government for inspecting tuberculosis affiliated cows, stood at the yard’s far end away from other structures.

Waiter Hayes Held on Forged Checks Scam

Charles F. Hayes, 35, was held under 2000 for the grand jury after allegedly passing nearly a dozen worthless and forged checks in Massachusetts in the past two weeks. Police say his victims were waitresses he paired with bankers through former positions at the Point Breeze Hotel Nantucket. Detectives traced him across cities and with W J Burns agents, noting he targeted waitresses to introduce him to men who would cash the checks. He carried two checkbooks and a list of his former waitresses when arrested. Checks cited include 50 from New Bedford and Lawrence, 40 from Marlboro, 30 from Northampton, 12 from South Framingham, 30 from Attleboro, and 10 from Waltham.

Tribute to Frances Willard at National WCTU Convention

At Asbury Park New Jersey on November 5 the national convention closed with a glowing tribute to Frances Willard founder of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Speakers from across the country praised Willard while urging Illinois delegates to lobby Representative Mann for a national prohibition bill.

Boxer Kid Shay Faces Mann Act Trial in Boston

Arthur W. Richards known as Kid Shay appeared before Judge Clarence Hale in U S District Court charged with violating the Mann white slave act. The case names three alleged victims including two under 18, plus two of his wife and Florence Welcome of Nashua and Minnie Baudry of Lawrence. Five Mann Act violations are alleged, tied to Florence Welcome and the two women identified as his wife and May Florence of Fitchburg.
