Reported election results show a Democratic sweep of the State ticket and Governor's Council, with Republicans dazed by the defeat. Voters who backed Bird or Walsh for local offices also aided Democratic gains, while Progressives varied on local races. The major question now centers on Legislature control. Curley and others including Thomas J Kenny John A Kelcher John R Murphy W T A Fitzgerald Earnest E Smith Also listed are City Council hopefuls Daniel J McDonald George W Coleman Henry E Hagen J Frank O Hare Fred J Kneeland Roger F Scannell Jr Frank B Howland Lewis J Hewitt F J W Ford and Frank H Cowan with additional filings expected.
The 1913 14 campaign began with eight nomination papers taken including Mayor Fitz gerald and a Progressive unknown. Ten vie for three council seats and three for two school committee posts while Congressman Peters took papers but withdrew last night. The day showcased a crowded opening with more developments to follow on page seven.
Mrs Patrick Cunningham of Roxbury claimed a body found in a Dover Street bathhouse as her husband Louie A Frederick an aging actor who died in poverty. Medical Examiner Leary refused payment of 180 to bury the man and investigate further after a clipping suggested the dead man was Frederick.
Everett G. Powers 99 of Crimacad and great grandfather planned to marry Annie L. Hart 47 of Charlestown but relatives prevented the marriage license from being issued yesterday. Hart withdrew her license request and the pair may still wed later.
Mr Powers went to Mrs Hart at 70 Lawrence Street Charlestown after being denied a marriage license. He said licenses could be held up and hinted at eloping elsewhere but Mrs Hart, a widow with seven great grandchildren, said she wants to care for him and stay for a lawful ceremony. The couple planned to wed at Bowdoin Square Tabernacle.
Nov 5 expositions of male attendants' conduct at Worcester State Hospital spurred threats against witnesses and reporters involved in the investigation. Investigator John Addi son Haien and witness Max B. Frankis required police protection and Haien armed himself with a Colt automatic for safety during testimony before the State Board of Insanity.
A heated clash at today’s State Board session arose over Chairman Michael J. O'Meara and William F. Whittemore opposing admission of evidence against the hospital, triggering an open breach early in proceedings.
Lieutenant Governor elect Edward P. Barry received a telegram from his opponent H. Goetting offering warm congratulations and best wishes after the victory. Barry replied cordially thanking Goetting and noting that the party of the people must rule, signed Edward P. Barry.
Customs Inspectors Sleep McKenna and King raided the British steamer Kendall King at the New England Gas and Coke Company dock in Everett yesterday. They used revolvers to drive back 25 frenzied Chinamen attempting to conceal opium in the ship's forecastle.
Inspectors summoned stevedores to assist against Chinese crew on a ship. A riot followed as officers faced massed resistance. Officials seized over $1000 worth of crude opium smuggled from Canada, with the opium and smoking paraphernalia found hidden in bunks. The Kendall Castle was involved during a Montreal-bound voyage.
A Gloucester fishing schooner Annie M Parker found nine exhausted men aboard a dory after a hurricane at sea. Captain Vincent Nelson and four crewmen died. survivors described hours of battling waves before being rescued by the Boston schooner Tifton. A separate sighting involved the liner Astraken discovering an abandoned schooner near Sable Island.
