Not To Their Credit Civil Service Row over Post Office Inspectors
Washington May 17. A dispatch to a Boston Republican journal asserts the current administration opposed civil service placement for post office inspectors yet the truth shows inspectors were brought under rules last July at Cleveland’s suggestion. Civil service plans extended to 2000 Washington positions and thousands more nationwide with proposed pass exams. The despatch claims Democrats misstate relations between administrations on reform.

Census Bureau Clerks and Civil Service Rules Questioned
The civil service commission has not acted on applying civil service rules to census bureau clerks. Action is not expected until autumn when many clerks are hired. The commission may urge that the law intends to bring clerks under the rules, while Superintendent Porter notes he is hiring census of 1880 veterans and that the competitive system could exclude them. Reinstatement rules for these clerks can be framed, and transfers from other departments are possible. The suspension does not indicate abandonment by the commission or accepting Secretary Noble's legal advice.
