Opposition to Commonwealth Pier land swap with New Haven rail
Boston officials and businessmen oppose a proposed exchange by the Port Directors of the Commonwealth dock land for a land tract between C and F streets. They warn the deal would block rail access to the pier, force New Haven control, and burden the state with pier equipment costs, threatening South Boston’s industrial life.

Rail rivals wary of New Haven control on docks
Some say leasing the Commonwealth dock to the New Haven would keep charges high and make service unprofitable for competitors. With New Haven influence and a land access blockade, steamship lines would likely boost the railroad’s position, while the plan seeks legislative approval to hand over new freight yard space in the South Boston dock area.
