Newburyport Y M C A Tax Case Heads To Court

In Newburyport on May 11 Judge Schofield heard equity court arguments over whether the Y M C A is a religious body for tax purposes. The dispute centers on a $10 000 Burley legacy bequeathed to the Y M C A by Daniel S Burley, with Burley & Stevens manufacturers paying about $120 in taxes under protest. Witnesses and legal teams argued the organization serves religious and social functions, which could affect its tax status.
