In Whitinsville May 11 Mrs Archibald Hardy, wife of the man found in the Blackstone River, disputed the Medical Examiner’s verdict of death by his own hand. She identified the corpse as her husband, cried that he was murdered, and lamented his intent to confess shortly before.
The widow insists her husband did not kill himself but was murdered. Police and Worcester officials suspect involvement in the Springfield dynamiting plot. The drowned body of Hardy was found in the river, tied with a necktie and suspenders, with a torn Local No. 57 card and Jacob Wheeler note nearby. Chief Cross backs the murder theory, contending Hardy feared confessing would reveal his three companions.
The Lomasney charter amendments were defeated in the Senate by 27 to 12, a victory for reform forces over Representative Martin M. Lomasney. The decisive vote signals the upper chamber will block further charter tinkering this year.
