Senate committee hears Fink on Grand Trunk freight rates

In New York at the Fifth Avenue Hotel the Senate Investigating Committee heard Albert Fink of the Trunk Line Association describe Grand Trunk control and discount practices. He outlined routes via Boston & Maine, Fitchburg, New York Central, Delaware & Lackawanna, Lake Shore and more, noting a 17 percent New York tonnage share and 8 percent from New London. He argued differential rates help nonCanadian lines and warned against pooling. The Erie and other roads pressed for parity with Canadian lines and harsher penalties for violations. The session adjourned to hear Chauncey Depew next.

Supreme Court Refuses Opinion on Private School Question

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declines to answer the House of Representatives on whether the justices must provide an opinion on private rights. It says such opinions are limited to important questions of law on solemn occasions and fears an ex parte ruling could prejudice parties or mislead lower courts. The justices emphasize the need for notice and proper proceedings before rendering any opinion. Boston, May 4, 1889. Signed by Marcus Morton and others.
