Senator Root cites taxes paid by property in income tax debate
In Washington on May 4 Senator Root of New York argued during Senate discussions on the income tax that ad valorem taxes on property amount to about three quarters of 1 percent, equating to an income tax of 15 percent, and that real estate in New York yields little net income, with property owners bearing the tax burden though renters may feel some impact if an income tax existed. He noted the national property tax already supports government at roughly eight times the proposed income tax.
