President James J. Storrow of the Merchants' Association told 400 Baptist Social Union members at Kingsley Hall that a few influential men can press the Legislature to fix a matter to suit them, admitting personal past fault in the process.
At Pittsburg on May 3 the Carnegie Hero Fund commission awarded 28 heroism medals and benefits. Patrick H. Fitzpatrick of Southbridge Mass received a bronze medal and 1200 to liquidate a mortgage after rescuing Mrs. Bridget L. McGrath from drowning in the Quinebaug River on May 23, 1908. Harriett O Connor of Southampton Mass, widow of Patrick O Connor, received a silver medal and death benefits of 3 a month until remarriage or death with additional benefits for each child under 16 dependent on her. Patrick O Connor died saving Andrew P Arthur and Charles J Arthur who had fallen through the ice on Mill River in Northampton. He released the rope-bearing man to help the two boys.
Governor Draper refuses to sign the direct nomination bill in the first Essex senatorial district. The measure becomes law without his signature, signaling possible vetoes on the general bill and the fifth Middlesex district special bill.

May Beauregard, 4, daughter of William Beauregard, was abducted from the Gray Nuns Home on Lafayette Street in South Salem this morning by a man believed to be her father. Authorities say she may be traveling toward Memramcook, New Brunswick, with an aunt, Ida Beauregard.
A girl placed in a Salem home was taken by a woman believed to be her aunt Ida Beauregard. Police say the pair rode a 10 p.m. train toward Portland. sighted in Newburyport, they are to be met in Portland Union Station for arrest. The father seeks custody.
Washington May 3 report weighs chances of a hid es duty. Cattle kings favored, beef frost remains. A leading New England senator outlines the scene noting uncertainty on a duty but stating Mr Aldrich backs keeping the duty.
