Thrilling rescues in Everett fire at Broadway Chambers

Two women and a man were carried to safety by Everett firefighters led by Captain George Hatch during a two alarm blaze at Broadway Chambers near Everett square. A trunk held $75,000 in securities and $100 in cash was lost. Mrs Whipple and Mr and Mrs J Henry Morley were rescued as rooms burned.

A dispatch reveals the entire fourteen man crew are prisoners in a Venezuelan jail. Elisha Payne was the last aboard and fled pursuit to St Vincent, Kingston B W I, before reaching safety.

Five Years Since Carrie Dy Knowles Crew Lost in Storm

The crew of the Carrie Dy Knowles was mourned for five years after a vanished voyage. Owner George Knowles died, insurance paid to the relatives, who have grown used to the loss. Payne, jailed in Kingston, claimed the crew were blown off course to Dominica and cast ashore in a Venezuelan port, with officers and men held as prisoners under harsh treatment.
