Mrs Mary Newton Case On Blackmail Charge In Court

The municipal court took up the case of Mrs Mary Newton on Thursday for attempting to extort money from George H Bessey. Bessey is under indictment for assault with a sand bag on Livingstone, and an alleged accomplice has just received a three year prison sentence. Letters presented claim Mrs Newton sought money via blackmail saying her son heard plans to kill and rob Livingstone and demanded payment.

German worker falls from rear hatch at Walworth plant

At about 1055 P M Thursday a German man about 30 employed by Carl Voßler at 47 Milk Street fell 15 feet through a rear hatch at the Walworth Manufacturing Co. 35 Hawley Street. He struck the brick engine room floor, was found unconscious, Dr Daily summoned and diagnosed internal injuries with bleeding from the lungs. He was transported to City Hospital by police ambulance.

Governor Uses Militia to Seize State Auditor Office

Governor Sherman again demanded entry to the Iowa State Auditor's office in Des Moines. The office was locked so militia moved to the capitol and forced the doors, seizing the auditor's office with Cattel as auditor pro tem. Brown was arrested by the sheriff amid rising excitement.
