Miners Demand Pay Rise As Coal Mine Strikes Spread

Pittsburg march 20 miners employed by New York and Cleveland Coal company demanded 3 cents per bushel for mining. Company refused and will shut down Monday. Over 10 men work at these mines and the strike now near general with about 19 000 miners idle. Coal for local consumption scarce and prices up.

NYO&W Shop Workers Strike Over Back Pay

Oswego N Y March 20 All of the employees in the New York Ontario and Western railroad shops struck this morning for back pay. The company owes wages for January February and part of March. The superintendent said January wages would be paid this week. The strikers will not resume work until January wages are received.

Libby Seeks Stranger Who Owes Him 280 Gold Dollars

George A Libby of McAdam Junction New Brunswick was traveling home by rail when a companion he had ridden with for some distance borrowed 280 gold dollars from him near Boston. The stranger left his valise as security and Libby is now searching for both the man and the money.

Hay named first assistant postmaster general in relief of Randall

Special Despatch to the Boston Post from Washington reports Malcolm Hay’s appointment as first assistant postmaster general. It notes he is not a Randall follower, is the ablest Democrat in western Pennsylvania, and opposes Randall’s tariff views. Carlisle has not pressed for offices, while the administration remains neutral between Carlisle and Randall factions.
