Missing Janitor Thomas Mathews Sparks Local Search

Middleboro June 27. Mystery surrounds the sudden disappearance of Thomas G. Mathews janitor of the Peirce building and a well known town figure. Mathews was last seen at 6 am by L B Mendall of the local post office. A search party led by Patrolman Harry Snow dragged the Nemasket river to Lake Aseawampsett with no result.

Letters Point to Despondent Mathews Vanishing Near River

Early morning letters from J Mathews to Chester Weston and others reveal farewell messages. Old Hub Pilot Boat Under British Flag

The Varuna, a 23 year old Boston pilots schooner built in 1890, has been sold to Stephen Simmons and will sail from National dock to Nassau under British registry. Once a staple for guiding incoming steamers, the vessel will operate between West Indian ports under the British flag after gas engines led to its sale.
