London June 27 The Unionists again increased their lead in a Leicester bye-election caused by Eliot Crawshay Williams leaving Parliament amid a divorce case. The trend follows Althingham May 29 where the Unionist candidate defeated the Liberal opponent by a larger majority.

In the latest contest Hewart, Liberal, led with 10 863 votes, Wilshere Unionist 9 279, Hartley Socialist 2 580. In December 1910 Crawshay Williams had a 6 691 majority over the Unionist candidate.

Boston Telephone Operators Union Elects Leaders at Annual Vote

In the second annual election at Wells Memorial building Miss Annie E. Malloy was elected president and Miss Mary C. Meagher vice president. Contests filled the remaining offices as polls ran 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with heavy balloting. About 75 percent of the union's 9940 members voted, and the count extended past midnight.

Giant snake coils around man on Monument Mountain

Charles O. Baldwin of Housatonic was gathering mountain laurel for his 25th wedding anniversary when a monster black snake sunning on Monument Mountain suddenly curled around his legs and waist after he stumbled. The constricting reptile fastened coils to a sapling then tightened its grip as bystanders watched.

Woodcutter Slays Large Snake That Squeezed Baldwin

Mr Baldwin was crushed by a constricting 11 foot 6 inch snake as it coiled on him. A nearby woodcutter slashed the reptile’s tail, causing it to loosen its grip and Baldwin to recover. The serpent measured five inches in diameter at its thickest point before dying.

Officer Flung in Window in Milford

Special Police Officer Edward Daveron of 16 Purchase Street was thrown from a carriage into a barn window near the Hotel William when the horse ran away. He suffered severe cuts and dislocations of the hip and shoulder. Policeman Michael Noland escaped serious injury by jumping from the carriage before it overturned. They were en route to the William stable to summon witnesses for an assault case to be tried tomorrow.

Skipper Tony Costa claimed a large unknown fish stole his noonday dinner while he worked his trawls near Boston Light. He described the event as fishy but said he had proof after consuming two full suppers following the loss of his meal.

A fisherman describes a hot day at sea when a huge fish, possibly a shark, raided his dinner floating in a tin. He watched as the creature ripped apart the tin, consumed the sandwiches and cake, and even chewed the tea bottle before he could retrieve the rope and continue work.

Women’s Club May Dissolve Over Proxy Dispute

Judge Braley of the Supreme Court ousted Mrs. Etta M. Seagrave and Mrs. Ed mund H. Squires from office as president and secretary of the Ladies’ Kennel Club. The decree says proxies were used illegitimately to elect May 12 officers. Lizzie M. Blake and Helen M. Talbot are named as rightful leaders. The case followed earlier warnings to reconcile factions, which were not heeded.

Married 70 Years, Husband Dies at 90 in Norfolk Conn

Calvin Sylvernale, aged 90, died last night after a long marriage with Mrs. Sylvernale who observed their 70th anniversary on June 17. The widow, age 11 in the report, remains unaware of his death. He never rode a railroad train and cast his first presidential ballot in 1844, voting in every election since.

Robbed Railroad Treasurers Pleads Guilty

Edwin F. Young former treasurer of the Chicago Terra Haute and Southwestern Railroad Company pleaded guilty to embezzling 53000 of the firm s funds and was sentenced to one to ten years in prison in Chicago on June 27.
