Washington June 23 A declaration for straight reciprocity emerged at an informal Senate conference of about a dozen Democratic Senators ready to defeat all amendments. They would amend Bailey by adding House free list provisions except meats and grain. A unanimous decision set to vote Monday on the Root amendment to the wood pulp and paper schedule. No speeches occurred in the Senate on the topic.

Senators Push Tariff Amendments Amid Reciprocity Debate

Senator Bailey plans to press his amendment vigorously while hoping for tariff provisions to be added to the Canadian Bill after a likely long struggle. Senator Clapp proposed adding alum, chlorine, aniline products, pigments, chemicals, kaolin, wool felts, and brass wire cloth to the free list. Informal conference in Senator Smith’s office drew opposition from Mr. Smith and John Sharp Williams, who together with Senator Stone warned against risking reciprocity. Senate leaders eyed a vote on Root’s provision before adjournment, and while many expect its defeat, discussions continued as to timing and attendance.
