A monster swordfish rammed its weapon into Captain Richard Noonan’s dory from the Dorcas off Block Island, splintering the craft. Fishermen George Noonan and Thomas O’Rourke were rescued after a difficult effort by three crewmates. The Dorcas arrived at T Wharf with 76 swordfish.
The Dorcas crew battles a 476 pound swordfish in southern Rhode Island waters. Captain Noonan and Engineer Louis Griffin plus a third man plucked two men from dangerous seas, then Elossed the fish after multiple dory spears. Crew to share about 275 each for two weeks’ work before returning to Block Island fishing grounds.
Brooks E. Adams treasurer of the First Christian Church in Wheeling was robbed by a masked bandit in the pastor's study during a morning sermon. The thief entered through a rear door, brandished a revolver, took the church collection basket, and fled. no trace was found.
POST from Boston reports the Chamber of Commerce party arrived in Liverpool at eight this morning in good health with a smooth passage and cordial reception. They were entertained at Port Sunlight by Sir William Lever and spent the afternoon in Chester. John H. Fahey serves as chairman.
Washington June 25 The Root amendment to the wood pulp and paper schedule of the Canadian reciprocity bill is expected to be defeated before Senate adjournment tomorrow as Democrats and many pro reciprocity Republicans oppose it.
With the amendment the reciprocity struggle will widen its focus beyond the immediate issue. The wool tariff and the free list bills are set to shape the broader tariff debate as lawmakers weigh broader trade protections and market access.
A wharf at King Edward Park Isle Gros Bois collapsed injuring 60 people tonight. The accident caused intense excitement throughout Montreal as responders checked the scene and the injured were treated.
In the early evening a packed wharf to board a Montreal ferry collapsed as timbers cracked. Hundreds fell into debris while the crowd tried to retreat. City ambulances rushed to the pier as rescue parties organized aid and victims were extricated for care.
Inspector Goodhue of the Quincy police halted a baseball game near Houghs Neck after spotting a crowd headed there with what appeared to be bats. Two youths then led him to report a woman robbed and beaten, but the officer could not find a scene and ended the game in the fourth inning with 18 players, an umpire, and about 300 spectators watching.

In Biddeford Maine a farm search for the body of Charles I Weymouth reported buried by 9 year old Gladys Snow on Dr Fred E Snow farm at Dayton proved unfounded. Authorities say the tale is likely a myth after no grave or facts substantiating the claim were found despite a day of searching.
Investigators pursue a possible Weymouth sighting in Canada while questioning Gladys and Beatrice Snow about a murder link at the Snow farm. A large posse may search the estate if the sisters’ story stands, as Joseph Buzzell Olney Merrill and Maude Snow remain jailed on murder and accessory charges.
Two men forced entry into painter David Weinstein's Bronx apartment and attacked his wife Mrs. Weinstein and their 2 year old daughter Rose. They robbed a diamond ring valued at 140 dollars and a gold band worth 15, plus seven dollars in cash. A witness, Mrs. Varmas, heard an exclamation about not wanting to be nabbed as the robbers fled less than an hour later. The scene was near the second floor of a five story building.
In Nantucket a fire destroyed the Barnes family boathouse. Thomas Kerr of New York and Thur low Weed Barnes Jr. of Albany remain in critical condition. Miss Helen Wilson and Miss Mildred De Haven, both of New York, were killed. Ulysse Pa hud, the Barnes' butler, died late last night.
Heraldville Vermont report says Thomas Whalen and his sons Mark and Matthew, ages 13 and 11, drowned when their leaky boat began filling on Patch Pond near Plymouth. The father tried to reach shore as the boys bailed, but one boy jumped, pulling the gunwale under, and all three fell into the water.
Leo Pelletier a 17 year old drowned in Mascuppie lake Tyngsboro near Lowell after a canoe with Joseph Golden and John Lessard capsized when one rider leaned over. Pelletier unable to swim sank immediately others swam ashore divers failed to reach the body.
Anna Kees known as Bonnie Hampton and Albert J Handtman, missing since Thursday night, were found in the Ohio River. The launch overturned after striking a coal barge while they were aboard. Both bodies were recovered in each other’s arms after searchers dragged the river.
A wild aeroplane roamed the aviation field at Garden City Long Island for two minutes injuring several attendants and racing away with aviator Andre Hartpert on board. Hartpert was cast to the ground when the craft lurched and dragged him 200 feet before crashing into an embankment.
A measure aims to add a clause to an elevated lease bill ensuring construction of the Dorchester and South Boston tunnels. Officials push for funding and timely work to advance rapid transit in the city.
In New York on June 25 a baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Parr is reportedly laid by the attending physician to the malicious acts of opponents to Mr. Parr as he investigates charges that J. W. Jenkins smuggled gems valued at $300,000. Mrs. Helen D. Jenkins associates with Parr and possesses diamonds in the case. Parr gains a statement from Mrs. Jenkins detailing the jewel smuggling method after weeks of effort.
Agents employed by Dr Jenkins tried to block government investigator Parr by alleging a blackmail motive and targeting his home. MacVeagh and Loeb dismissed the charges while spies and shadows followed him. Mrs Parr faced a delicate health period after hospital discharge.
Mathew McDonough eight son of Mr and Mrs Coleman McDonough of 217 West Ninth Street South Boston died at City Hospital after drinking nearly a pint of whiskey found in his home. He awakened early, drank the liquor, and was pronounced alcoholic by Dr Buckley before being admitted. He died shortly before 8 o clock last night, among the youngest treated for alcoholism at the hospital in years.
David Chute 51 of 21 Walnut Road Somerville foreman at George G Saunderson Baking Co Charles Town and John McGee 38 of Delaware Street Somerville arrested on larceny of 2100 pounds of flour from the Saunderson company. Witnesses at the Boston and Maine railroad freight sheds reported a man driving a milk wagon removing flour.
Governor Foss issues ultimatum to L road officials in subway lease fight. He will not sign the omnibus bill and insists on merging the West End with the Elevated on a 7 percent basis, a 25-year lease, and immediate subway construction steps.
The Governor told Mr Winsor that uniting the West End with the Elevated is the best business settlement and pledged to protect the public with citizen support. He aims to settle before the Legislature adjourns and opposes delaying the dispute. The Post notes possible coercive steps to force a compromise and mentions eminent domain as a tool. Louis D. Brandeis warned that West End stockholders opposing public opinion risk losing track locations to the Boston Elevated Road.
