Harvard’s 1911 senior class day proceeded amid intermittent rain to a brilliant celebration. An estimated 30,000 friends and relatives attended as lanterns garlanded the yard and fountains danced on cue, creating a moving picture of colors and crowds ahead of commencement.
Relatives shocked by the fire victim Harriett Kelley who had lived years as a woman and served as trusted domestic in several wealthy Back Bay families. The crowd expresses unwavering loyalty as the new king and queen greet their dominions.
In New York a Chicago widow, Mary E. White, aided by railroad officials, seeks a traveling bag containing her husband’s ashes and a bank book for $9000. The bag apparently moved from the Pittsburg parcel room to New York and back, with an unidentified machinist involved and no clue to his tools.
Special agent Frank Cheske of the National Metal Trades Association recounted a morning visit by a man claiming to seek work in New York after leaving Pennsylvania railroad shops in Pittsburg. The man carried a misdelivered handbag, which Cheske opened to reveal a bank book and a tin can, suggesting a connected theft or concealment scheme.
Giuseppe di Maio was acquitted of first degree murder by a 4 member jury reporting at 8 53 last night in the East Cambridge courthouse. He cried and held up a photo of his wife and child in Italy after the verdict and thanked those who supported him.
