Senate panel expands free list for print paper

Washington June 13 The Senate finance committee voted to amend the Underwood tariff bill to include Canadian reciprocity act provisions and extend the free list to print paper valued at not more than 4 cents a pound, provided no export duties licenses fees or export restrictions are imposed on the paper board or wood pulp used.

Canada trade amendment faces export restriction questions

Senator Simmons of the finance committee warned that though the Canada word is omitted from the amendment it could still affect Canada due to provincial export limits on pulp and wood. He said related countervailing duties were not yet enacted and the matter would be revisited tomorrow. The panel aims to wrap by next Wednesday and hold a Democratic caucus to possibly approve a report by June 25.

Captured Abattoir Steer After Escape From Brighton Yard

A steer named Brighton, who wrecked the stock yard slaughter room on Thursday and escaped through a window, was found and captured yesterday in a field off Atkins street. Stockyard workers and police surrounded the animal as James Murphy, an employee, shot the animal and carted it back to the abattoir.
