Fire on Coal Wharf Draws Rowers to Rescue on Charles River

Chairman Matthew Hale and Medical Examiner George Magrath, both in single shells, aided Captain William J. Smith’s crew in freeing the coal barge St Nicholas from the burning John E Cousens Coal Company wharf at Cottage Farm. They rode up the Charles River and helped warp the boat to midstream. The blaze caused about 3000 dollars in damage to the Cousens property as fire units from Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge battled the flames for an hour. Forty horses on the adjacent stable were moved to safety. The fire damaged the boiler shed, a coal pocket, a hoist, and part of a 80 foot tower before being contained.
