Prisoner Rescued After Attempted Hanging at Hanover Street Station

Andrew Giovanni an Italian twenty four years old attempted to hang himself from the bars of his cell door last night at the Hanover street station. Prompt first aid and the pulmotor at the Relief Station were believed to save his life.

Giovanni’s death by suicide in police hold

Giovanni, a single man living at 302 Hanover Street, hanged himself with overalls straps after being brought to a desk for questioning. Janitor James Pearce found him, and after first aid and pulmotor treatment at the Relief Station, hospital authorities optimistic about his chances.

The body of 14 year old Bernie Holstein was found in bushes in Morgan Park Chicago with a bullet wound to the head. He lay face down, hands tied behind his back with his shirt, and legs bound with suspenders.

Beautiful Window for Bangor Church

A stained glass window designed by Charles J. Connick for All Soul's Church in Bangor Maine is on exhibit in Connick's studio at 9 Harcourt Street from 9 to 12 this morning. The five life sized panels center on Christ and the four evangelists with related life of Christ scenes below. The tracery features delicate angels and emblems of the four evangelists. The Bangor church project is by the Boston firm Cram Goodhue Ferguson.

Burial Today for Hartford Girl Who Died by Carbolic Acid

Funeral services for Rose T. Fivean a 20 year old Hartford girl who drank carbolic acid at Castle Square Hotel Sunday will be held at 11 this morning at City Hospital morgue. Interment follows at a Jewish cemetery in West Roxbury. Brothers arrived from Hartford after Medical Examiner Leary said the death was voluntary. Police have ended their search for the hotel registrant.

Rebels Fire on Shanghai After Quiet Night

Firing resumed at 9 tonight over the foreign settlement with shells hitting the bandstand. A Portuguese boy was mortally injured as foreigners suffered narrow escapes. By 11 pm the bombardment continued while rebels appeared to target the settlement in retaliation for volunteers disarming soldiers. Panic spread as crowds fled the native city and foreign guards patrolled all settlement boundaries.

William W. Welsh and Dr. Henry B. Bigelow report a vast bed of giant scallops extending 30 miles or more offshore from Block Island to the Virginia capes.
