Charles B. Durborow of Philadelphia completes an 8 hour 12 minute solo crossing to reach Boston Light on his fifth try after battling swirling eddies and dangerous cross currents.
The story details a grueling endurance swim by Durborow who, despite slow progress and overtraining signs, reached the Light after an all day train journey and only an hour of sleep. He faced slack water near the Light ladder and had to walk the last 60 feet to shore as experts confirm he swam to the Light fairly.
Inspector Thomas Sheehan brought Walter S. Bell from Portland Maine who is wanted in this city on charges of passed two worthless checks on July 2 and 9. Bell is a 35 year old married traveling salesman.
Mrs Mildred Ross 27 of 9 Farrar street Lynn became suddenly ill on an electric car last night at East Fourth and O streets South Boston. Dr William J Gallivan was summoned and found she was suffering from convulsions.
July 27 London crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square for a joint demonstration by the Men's Federation for Woman's Suffrage and the East End branch of the W S P U. Sylvia Pankhurst, on license under the Cat and Mouse law, led the protest and was rearrested after rioting. she was taken to Holloway jail amid rumors of a resolution charge on Premier Asquith's residence.
Police mobilized to prevent damage as Miss Pankhurst and about twenty supporters were arrested near Whitechapel before a large crowd moved to Trafalgar Square. The procession, with band playing the Marseillaise, halted at the Nelson monument as banners were displayed.
STATE HEADQUARTERS M V WAREHAM July 27 All Cape Cod turned out to welcome 6000 militiamen from Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut arriving for an eight days tour of regimental and maneouvre duty. The 18 special trains conveyed the Massachusetts outfits from Boston Worcester South Framingham and Springfield arriving at their destinations on schedule without incident.
About 6000 soldiers settle into bivouac with light duties for the day. The Ninth and Fifth Regiments endure the longest five mile hikes from detrainment to camp at Peter's pond and West Barnstable while crowds tour the grounds and hear vivid accounts of modern warfare.
Miners at Calumet Michigan prepared to return to work tomorrow if state military authorities in the strike zone back their demands. A conference with company representatives Sheriff Daniel Crane and General P L Abbey led to a decision to try a general resumption of work, with militia in the area. A protest was adopted against the troops presence and a communication sent to Governor Ferris.
Edwin Perron, described as Massachusetts first eugenic husband, told Lynn police he was assaulted at home in School Street. Officers went to the residence to prevent further disturbance, finding the wife and the unnamed man who had attacked Perron had already departed.
Perron and Catherine Wills marry June 26 in Lynn with a certificate of physical fitness. Rev C Thurston Chase officiates claiming to uphold eugenic standards. The couple, both well known, report a troubled marriage with a violent incident at home and a threatened separation.
John O Callaghan secretary of the United Irish League of America and a prominent Boston newspaper man died at Carney Hospital after a brief illness. Born October 18 1865 in Killavullen Ireland he worked for the Cork Herald Cork Examiner and Dublin Freeman's Journal before supporting the Irish home rule movement.
Wealthy shoe manufacturer Thomas H. Logan of Kimball Road Lynn found his home ransacked after a 20 minute absence. Burglars entered likely via pantry window and stole about $1000 worth of jewelry while the family was at the beach. Police investigated the break in and collected scattered clothing and disturbed contents.
Rose T Fiveanson a 20 year old Hartford girl training as a nurse died at Castle Square Hotel by drinking carbolic acid. A note on the bureau blamed no one and cited a clear mind. A companion left for a doctor and did not return as the family journeyed toward Boston.
Miss Fiveanson makes a second attempted suicide at a Boston hotel, aiming to end her life with carbolic acid. Two weeks earlier Miss Rita Ryan, her roommate, saved her by snatching the bottle. The room’s groans drew hotel staff, and the dying words pointed to an unseen caller named Billy. Police trace the poison to a Harrison avenue drug store bought under the alias Mrs. McClay.
Morris Levine announced a half day to 75 workers at Levine, Kelikow & Co. on the ninth floor, prompting a quick descent as smoke poured from the floor below. Firemen extinguished a blaze causing about $10,000 in damage, averting a tragedy if the workers had stayed.
A 1 pound newborn girl given birth to by Mr and Mrs Edward Weaver in Harrisburg required a pulmotor to restart heart action and breathing after forty four minutes with no signs of life. Dr C C Stauffer and Dr R L Perkins oversaw the effort and the machine was quickly fetched from the Harrisburg Gas Company to the delivery scene.
Juarez officials refuse to give answers as Charles B Dixon Jr United States immigration inspector wounded by Mexican soldiers Saturday is released from Juarez hospital and brought to El Paso on orders from Mexico City after American Consul demanded his release and the arrest of the shooters. The Huerta government received a telegram from Washington demanding court martial for the attackers and the liberation of two other Americans Charles Bissell and Bernard McDonald.
Mexican Consul Miranda and former Chihuahua secretary Guiller mo Porras interceded for Dixon’s release after talks with U S officials. Consul Edwards demanded immediate arrest, trial, and punishment of the suspects, holding Juarez authorities responsible for noncompliance. Arthur Walker and soldiers connected to Dixon’s arrest were jailed per Colonel Castro’s report to E W Berkshire.
