A highwayman hides in woods between Munson and Palmer and forces a car carrying nine passengers to stop by placing a tree on the rails in an attempted robbery.
Secretary McAdoo stated that the drop of government 2 percent bonds to 95 1 2 was largely caused by a concerted action by influential New York City banks designed to sow apprehension about the bonds and to aid their efforts to defeat the currency bill.
Banks own about 730 million dollars of 2 per cent bonds used as security for national bank notes. Market value trails purchase price by roughly 30 million. Secretary McAdoo says banks may report bonds at par until conditions force change. He notes 2 per cent bonds remain worth par despite market decline and warns against selling at a loss. Between 8 and 11 pm three fires in Somerville near Magoun square kept the fire department on the run. Police chased leads as alarms blamed arson after each blaze, with the final 10 25 pm call reporting the largest property loss.
