Boston Heat Wave Claims Two Lives as Temperatures Soar

Two deaths and about 25 prostrations occurred during the second day of the first hot wave in Greater Boston. Mary Ryan 22 of Roxbury suffered a hand injury while adjusting an electric fan. Dennis O'Brien 50 of Somerville died after collapse and Horatio B Emerson 77 of Malden, a color bearer of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, collapsed at home.

Firemen Flush Streets and Free Ferry Service Ordered

Mayor Fitzgerald directed Fire Commissioner Cole to flush congested streets yesterday. He ordered Public Works head Rourke to run East Boston ferries free for women and children and instructed Public Buildings chief Superintendent Fish to place benches on bridges. The Common was opened to the public for quiet sleep without police disturbance.

Prostrations widespread as heat overtakes workers citywide

Hottest Day Ever Reported on Cape Cod

Cape Brewster July 2 records 102 degrees in shade across the Cape making it the hottest day seen. Aged residents say they never saw such heat. Cranberry bog and farm work halted in many villages. Laborer Albert Joseph collapsed from the heat and others were carried home exhausted.

Heat drives Boston postmen to cut noon mail delivery

Postmaster Mansfield ordered district superintendents to ease carrier workload during the heat wave. Many stations skipped the noon delivery to let mail carriers cool off, restarting at 2 o'clock to resume routes.
