Ford named jail keeper in East Cambridge

George D. Ford of Sumner road Cambridge, formerly superintendent of the Cambridge Cemetery, is appointed deputy master and keeper of the House of Correction and jail in East Cambridge, succeeding the late George W. Cushing. He begins Feb 1 and previously held the deputy master post from 1885 to 1903.

Boston unions enforce new wage scale and 47 hour week

The Boston Artificial Stone Cement and Asphalt Workers' Union voted to enforce the spring wage scale on all jobs starting today, with minimums of 60 cents for finishers 45 cents for helpers and 35 cents for laborers plus time and a half for overtime and all expenses paid on out of town jobs. The shop will switch to a 47 hour week with no weekly wages loss. James Kirby was elected international president of the Carpenters and Joiners union. Patternmakers plan a Detroit convention in July. Longshoremen locals of the A F I unions met yesterday and voted to hold another conference with transatlantic liner agents to settle wage disputes. The next meeting, tomorrow morning, will decide whether about 3000 dock workers in the port go on strike.

Refuse B M O F for Extra Work Dock Freight Handlers Union 809 voted yesterday with over 400 members to reject the Boston & Maine railroad wage offer. The union seeks 2.40 per day flat rate, vs 2.30 daily plus 25 cents hourly for grain elevator and bulk cargo work, and may press for a new conference with Superintendent Ray.

Settlement Likely in New York Garment Strike

In New York the garment workers strike nears settlement as manufacturers propose a sliding wage scale and a 52 hour week for all workers.
