Dorchester chemist Edgar F. Billings died suddenly in his Freeport Street laboratory. Colchicine derived from meadow saffron is believed to have caused the death. Governor Haines prefers Maine not join a permanent conference of state railroad supervision heads.
In Boston the first recorded death from colchicine poisoning is reported. Edgar F. Billings, a Dorchester chemist and former president of Billings Clapp & Co., died after mistaking colchicine for sugar at lunch. His sister-in-law recounts the emergency. autopsy at Harvard Medical School sought confirmation of the poison. His widow and four children survive along with his mother.
Governors favored a New England railroad conference with two citizens from each state to study transportation questions. Governor Haines said Maine should not be represented as a Maine bill already seeks a new commission with full control over public service corporations.
London January 27 The Constantinople telegraph reports the Ottoman government signed a contract to obtain an advance of 10 million dollars to be repaid from the forthcoming loan tied to a new concession for Constantinople Metropolitan railways.
New York reports Charles Finlay president of the National Bank said Dr F F Friedman of Berlin will bring or send his tuberculosis cure to the United States to prove it. Finlay stated Friedman will sail for New York within two weeks and that his brother in New York has received a cable confirming readiness to depart.
Rufus H. Kendrick a 90 year old resident escaped from his nurse last night and leaped from a second story window at 712 Main Street Wakefield without injury. He was found on the car tracks before the house and carried inside by Bay State Car Company employees. Dr Joseph W Heath said Kendrick had no injuries. A half hour earlier he had attempted to jump from a front window but was stopped by the nurse.
Gilbert D. Raine, editor and sole owner of the Memphis News-Scimitar, sold his holdings after a month of bickering. Frank Munsey, the New York publisher, is the purchaser. Raine called Roosevelt's defeat last fall the greatest calamity to befall the nation and said he would offer the paper for sale at a prominent downtown corner.
Miss Bernice E. Leach, aged unknown, pinned a note reading If am just tired of life to her breast before sealing gas flow with a tube at 486 Main Street in New London. She had come from St. Albans Vermont with her mother and stepfather and was recovering from plans for a debut at the Nathan Hale School concert next month.
Miss Leach, employed as a stenographer by James Duffy, resided with the Leach family in Main street. Herkelrath, a New York broker, had visited her and was seen with her at the station before her death, which followed a gas inhalation and a brief suicide note. The body was to be sent to Chelsea, Massachusetts for interment.
Robert T. Ashby of 35 Gainsboro Street was assaulted on Huntington Avenue near West Newton Street in Back Bay last night. A stranger slashed the left side of his face with a razor and fled as a pursuing mob, led by police and followed by students and residents, pressed the manhunt.
Ashby, wounded with nine stitches after a razor slash near Huntington avenue, is aided by a physician. A crowd of about 200, led by Patrolmen, chased a man with a closed razor through yards and cellars along West Newton Street and St Botolph Street before the suspect vanished.
The Balkan plenipotentiaries with full powers appointed a committee to draft a note to the Turkish plenipotentiaries explaining why the peace conference must now be considered broken off. Draft aimed for Monday approval, as allies press to secure their objective without resuming war.
An hour and a half meeting produced a committee from each delegation to draft a note. Members include Michael Madjaroff Bulgarian minister in London, Georgios Streit Greek minister to Austria Hungary, Count Voynovitch Montenegrin cabinet chief, M R Vesnitch Servian minister to France, and M Politis of the Greek delegation. They outlined that the league demands Adrianople and Aegean islands as peace preconditions and that delaying action risks morale and resources, with dangers from Roumania and Austria.
Hakki Pasha has refused the foreign ministry portfolio. The post has been offered to Prince Said Halim, an Egyptian prince and president of the Council of State who is expected to accept.
Commissioner Lohmer and Sheriff Harburger propose a plan to raise funds and avoid the 87-year-old General Daniel Sickles' detention. A conference with Mrs Sickles and Stanton is set for tomorrow to settle a $23,466 deficiency in his accounts as chairman of the State Monuments' Association.
William Power aged 65 was killed in his bedroom by a blow to the head. Police hold his wife Elizabeth Power 42 on murder charges. She says he abused her during 12 years of marriage and that a pail of dirty water and a threat preceded the fatal confrontation.
Mrs Power sobs as she tells police and reporters her tale of a death at 977 Western Avenue after Dr Thomas F Grady called to say a man was dead under peculiar circumstances. The oldest child Emily 11 says she took a knife from her father Saturday night.
John M. Devaney of 197 Cambridge street Cambridge left City Hospital after visiting his sick wife who was to undergo an operation this morning. Ten minutes later he was brought back to the hospital dead in a car accident. He was taken to the operating table but prayers could not save him.
Motorman Daniel J. Coyne of North Cambridge was arrested for manslaughter and released on 3000 bail. Devaney had just left Mt. Auburn Street hospital when he paused at Willard Street and was struck by an inbound Harvard Square car. He died at the hospital from a fractured skull.
This morning at 11 o'clock Comptroller Lohmer announced a new national fund to relieve General Sickles of financial embarrassment. He led with a $100 donation, followed by Sheriff Harburger also giving $100. The sheriff expected to name a treasurer and hoped to raise the total within 10 days. Anybody anywhere can join.
