Rome dispatch reports Russian torpedo boats tried to attack two Japanese cruisers en route through the Suez canal. Russian warships remain nearby as both fleets watch each other. Feverish preparations continue in Japan and Russia as they mobilize for maneuvers in Manchuria and Corea.
The Post quotes criticism by some Boston educators over Miss Emily IF Carpenter’s selection as head of Winthrop Grammar School. It notes no official opposition from the Association of Masters’ Assistants, only individuals objecting to women in municipal offices, while urging a broader view of women’s evolving roles in business and education.
A proposal urges profit sharing and a state pension fund, with limits on child labor. Rome Jan 15 Prince Takinghuki aboard the Japanese ship Ninein says that while In and Kasuga were escorted by nine warships two Russian torpedo boats approached and fled when faced with the escort. Britain is said to concentrate 52 warships in the Mediterranean while no sign of yielding to Japan's proposal. Potential breaches arise from Corean point occupations and joint Russian Japanese naval presence in the Red Sea.
State Department advices from Japan report extraordinary activity in war preparations. The notices indicate a looming Russo-Japanese tension, with pessimism over amicable settlement while Japan seeks possible means to end the dispute, professing peace while the run position remains unclear.
Berlin, Jan 15. The British government is believed here to have identified itself more fully week by week with the Japanese position, until now. Great Britain is almost as deeply committed as Japan, a development noted by Russian statesmen. The United States support for Japan in pressing China treaties also factors into the mood. A 12 year old girl and her mother chased a thief from Mrs. Mary A. Kearns's Roxbury home at 9% Norfolk avenue. The man fled with prayer beads and a child's glove before being stopped near Norfolk avenue and Magazine street by the girl and Mrs. Kearns. Patrolman Mullins took the suspect to Station 9 where the items were identified.
Annie McInnis, 19, of 28 Norwood Street Dorchester, reported missing to Station 11 police. Parents say she left Wednesday evening to visit her aunt in Arlington and has not been heard from since. She is 6 feet 6 inches tall, about 130 pounds, dark complexioned, wearing a dress of mixed goods and a light gray overcoat.

The New England Milk Producers Union discusses creating a farmer owned stock company to ship milk directly to Boston consumers. Aimed at removing contractor control, the plan envisions a $1 million capital, 40 000 shares, and open market pricing to boost farmer profits and curb milk strikes while owning cans and a Boston receiving plant. Pittsburg Jan. 15 Senator M A Hanna in an interview tonight denied being a presidential candidate. He said he has sent out 2000 personal letters denying this and does not want to be considered as such. He called the opposition to Roosevelt nomination overestimated by Democratic papers and said he would issue the call for the Republican national convention in a few days.
A fire at St. Mary's College for Girls in the McGregorville area triggered two alarms and a general alarm as every Manchester unit responded. The blaze remains in the basement and caused only minor damage, with local residents noting the district as the worst fire area in the city.
The National League of Commission Merchants elected officers in Louisville with C. B. Myers of Chicago as president and Charles F. Mead of Boston as vice president. A. Wadren Patch of Boston was chosen secretary and B. P. Sperry of Louisville as treasurer. The next convention will be in New Orleans and delegates will tour Mammoth Cave aboard a Louisville and Nashville Railroad trip.
Judge Emmons releases a statement exonerating the Boston police department from involvement in undercover liquor discipline. He pins the practice on paid agents of the Retail Liquor Bottlers Association who shadow saloons and buy in toxicants as proof of over the five gallon limit. The Police Board has accepted this evidence and scheduled hearings for three liquor dealers next week.
The pause on the Chicago livery drivers strike ends as a committee of owners and drivers led by President Young of the International Teamsters Association reaches an agreement. Union men are ordered back to work after weeks of disruption to mourners and funeral services.
Miss Louise Drew daughter of actor John Drew has entered the Roman Catholic Church. She was baptized by the Rev Father O Keefe C S P at St Paul the Apostle Church Columbus Avenue and Fifty ninth Street. Actress Anna Williams served as godmother.
An eastbound Michigan line car overloaded with passengers was struck by a Grand Trunk passenger train at Gratiot avenue and Dequindre street in Detroit. Over 34 people injured, car dragged 200 feet, seven hospitalized, 27 sent home. No fatalities reported though some injuries are very serious and may prove fatal.
