From Stenographer to Grand Opera Star in Europe
Boston society observes the rise of a young soprano who funded her training through stenography and concert singing. Starting at 15, she taught herself, earned money by 18, and by 19 performed for paying audiences. After study in Italy, she debuted in Naples in 1908 and soon sang major operas across Europe and the United States. She married Paul Longone, now travels between Chicago and European houses, and tonight performs under contract with the Chicago Opera Company at $500 a night, ahead of her Metropolitan Opera House debut in Suzanne.
