In Humboldt county near Golconda, a battle at Kelly Creek left eight Indians and one officer dead, with others captured after a month of pursuit. Ed Hoyle, the officer killed, was among the whites unharmed otherwise. It was the first clash between Indians and whites in years.
On January 12 four cattlemen from Camp Denio set out to probe thefts near Little High Rock Canyon. They were ambushed by Shoshone Indians, killed, and stripped. A pursuit party confronted the chiefs led by Captain Donnelly, triggering a battle that left four men dead and several Indians killed or captured. Coroner Buckley and Deputy Nosinger went to Golconda to secure remains and conduct the inquest.
In London the veto bill debate runs with sparse attendance as George Lansbury laments lack of interest. The second reading opened, with four days of discussion planned and a vote unlikely before Thursday night or possibly Friday.

Miss An nette Berthe Grunspan, suing William English Walling for 100000 dollars for breach of promise, collapsed on the witness stand in New York Supreme Court. She denounced Walling's counsel and cried out that he treated her harshly before being carried to an ante-room. Her mother tried to reach the table but was stopped by court officers.
The Massachusetts Governor and five of eight councilors oppose commuting Lena Cusumano's death sentence for murdering her husband Frank, citing gender. Governor Foss says he would be sorry to see a woman electrocuted, while Councillor John Quinn joins him against execution of a woman. A prolonged fight could redraw capital punishment debate in the state.
A sequence of minute fire calls lists locations in Boston area streets with timestamps from 5:25 a m to 6:16 p m. Names include Benjamin Cohen Rose E Watched Mary Haley Margaret Foster Michael J Hankard Iver Johnson Company Mary Larkin and Abraham Schemel with damages noted from 50 to 150 dollars and several no loss reports.
Senator Jonathan Bourne of Oregon, leader of the Progressive Republican League, charged in a Senate speech that President Taft used his appointive power to intimidate members of Congress. Bourne, a longtime friend and golfing companion, spoke amid recent Oregon appointment troubles.
Amelie M. Leonard admits stealing jewelry and other property from Miss Mary J. Lockwood. Police find unset diamonds and a trove of valuables in Leonard's Commonwealth avenue apartment. Bail set at 10000 with remand to Charles street jail. total property valued around 20000.

Graham Glass a Harvard senior and son of a Portland millionaire married Helen Roche of Roxbury yesterday afternoon in Nashua New Hampshire. Peggy Walton and Alden Chase attended as bridesmaid and best man. Glass, 22, lives at Manter Hall and has ties to Spokane and Portland.
In Berlin New Hampshire 30 guests escaped from the Central House after a fire started shortly after 10 o'clock. High wind and cold hampered firefighters and the blaze was controlled two hours later. Loss estimated upwards of 10000 dollars. Cause not known.
Rabbi Harry Levi of Wheeling declines to state his decision on a call to the Temple Adath Israel in Boston. He says a full statement will follow later.
In Wheeling West Virginia observers expect Levy to accept Boston's offer after delaying a public statement for a few days. Levy has boosted his congregation’s size and led interdenominational efforts while serving since 1897 at Eaff Street Temple. He holds roles with the Anti Tuberculosis League the State child labor committee and the Probation Officers Association. He married Ruth Wolf in 1908 and is a Cincinnati native who trained at Hebrew Union College.
In Chicopee Massachusetts on February 27 18 year old Josephine Pizroski barefoot from her home rushed into the icy Chicopee River and rescued two girls Victoria Karzenowski 13 and Mabel Groczowski 14 while a third girl Mary Zybura 13 drowned and her collie Beauty failed to save her.
At 3 45 this morning Stoughton called for aid from Brockton to fight a spreading fire starting in Walter Swans block that wiped out five stores and extra rooms of the courthouse. The danger of spread to the business section necessitated outside help.
At Palm Beach Florida on February 27 Mayor Fitzgerald jokes about a Boston paper showing him in a pink bath suit. He clarifies he owns a blue suit missing at the bathhouse and later entertains guests as a singer in the grill room. Eleonora Sears is noted entering with aviation curiosity.
Police identify about $2000 of loot as property of Mrs. Gaston's aunt Miss Lockwood and about $500 as belonging to Miss Mary L. Pecker. Rest awaits appraisal as officers inventory items from the Hotel Brunswick theft. A pawn ticket for a three-diamond ring was recovered. Additional property valued over $6000 found earlier. trunk shipments to Bordeaux and England traced. Horace Cooper tied to the French university.
President Lincoln is officially welcomed by the Mayor and City Council in Washington while the Peace Conference adjourns after recommending a plan of adjustment to Congress. A hundred guns were fired in honor. A Southern Congress resolution calls for construction of several plated frigates.
