A fashionably styled apartment house at 220 Marlboro Street sustained about $13 000 damage in a two alarm fire last evening. Nearby properties were briefly at risk as flames threatened adjoining holdings before firefighters contained the blaze.
Firefighters battled a blaze that began in the rear hallway of a six story Boston structure before 7 PM. The disaster sent residents and guests streaming into the night while the top floors housing the Hartwell and Smith families suffered the most damage. Authorities controlled the fire with aid from police, closing a connecting roof door to limit spread to adjacent premises.
The Dominion government halted the entry of Black people from the United States and blocked a boundary-bound party seeking to reach Western Canada. Officials deemed the group undesirable citizens and refused admission at the border in Winnipeg on February 24.
Ottawa reports that Winnipeg immigration follows a general Dominion aim to favor white newcomers and deter non desirable entrants. The law remains unchanged but officials more strictly interpret the act to bar those unlikely to become desirable citizens.
Robert E. Davie, the so called boy broker who vanished from Boston last October after swindling investors out of about half a million dollars, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro. He is said to be penniless, having slept on park benches for three weeks, and will waive extradition. Hyde Park approved annexation to Boston by 982 to 744 with 10 blank votes. Town Moderator Charles G. Chick declared the result at 9 10 in the evening after the vote opened at 4 o'clock. The measure called on selectmen to urge the state Legislature to annex the town to Boston as outlined in Article 1 of the warrant.
The strike of Traxi-Service chauffeurs and cab drivers ended yesterday through mediation by the Civic Federation of Labor. Negotiations ran from noon to 6 pm with statements by discharged chauffeurs Haney and Halligan and company officials detailing the dispute. Conferences adjourned to Monday morning for final action and permanent adjustments by Carriage Cab and Chauffeurs Union 126 and the Taxi-Service Company.
Paris authorities served an expulsion order against Willie Hoppe world billiard champion. He has until Tuesday to quit France after returning to Paris for three months of exhibitions with rivals including Cassignole and Adorjan. Hoppe arrived with a daughter of Thomas W. Walsh aboard the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria after leaving New York Feb 11.

James a Democrat and chairman of Cambridge's Board of Aldermen will run as an independent for mayor prompted a Non Partisan committee to try to persuade him to withdraw in favor of Jeremiah F. Donovan or to persuade Donovan to withdraw for James or both for Marshall F. Blanchard.

Natick Police Chief Brown announced at Wellesley College faculty that a warrant will be served today on John Squires the janitor for stealing cats. He warned that if college officials are implicated or condone the thefts warrants may be issued against them as well.
