Replacement of Bay State with Calvin Austin on Eastern Steamship line
The Eastern Steamship Company's Portland service shifts to the new steel propeller Calvin Austin, in place of the Bay State, with Governor Dingley as backup. The Austin and Dingley will handle winter trade due to soaring freight and perishable cargo, while passenger traffic this December also exceeds prior years. Offshore and shore freight details follow, including haddock and cod rates for various schooners and delays due to a northwest gale.
