Providence R I Dec 30 a fourth large lumber fire in four months broke out at about 9 pm in a shingle shed of H A Grimwood & Co at 1163 Westminster street. The blaze spread to seven of nine storage sheds and to adjacent yards of L Vaughan & Co. Estimated loss 100000 insured. Grimwood losses about 70000 Vaughan about 30000.
A report states that bribes of 1000 were offered to four Aldermen by representatives of the gas trust. The incident centers on alleged attempts to influence aldermanic decisions regarding gas contracts and regulatory matters.
Be a Be a INSANE POISONED FAMILY reports from Morrisville Vermont state Mrs Newell Ellsworth died and her husband and 10 year old son fell ill after she poisoned their food during a temporary insanity. Health Officer Rublee and Dr Bates announce the family had been poisoned over two weeks. George the son is improving while Mrs Ellsworth died early today. The physicians found homicidal mania and mental irresponsibility but no further official action is expected.
In Saturday’s issue an error claimed Cambridge port grocer Mr. P. J. Smith turned out Velin a man eight years old from his house for lack of support. Investigation shows Velin was never a roomer. he was once a tenant. Smith only aided the old man when he found him in need with a tenant’s lodging.
Boston area weather forecast calls for fair conditions over the weekend with clear skies. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mild with light winds and comfortable temperatures. No precipitation is anticipated and outdoor plans should proceed safely.
Several American Canadian and Newfoundland fishing vessels are frozen fast in an ice floe in the Bay of Islands off St John s Newfoundland due to an unusual cold spell. A steamer may cut them out. if not, they must remain trapped until next spring.
While skating on Mill Pond Dorchester two brothers John and James Ryan aged 13 and 11 fell through thin ice. Local 13-year-old Thomas McMahon of 44 Leonard Street saved them, diving in to grasp the older boy and pull both to safety. He said he did not hesitate and swam to solid ice.
The body found in mud flats at East Cambridge end of Craigie’s bridge was identified as George W. Nichols, a 65 year old Reading jeweller. Officials will open a death inquiry. no foul play is suspected. He leaves a widow and two children. A Boston jeweller’s card and some jewelry were found on him.
Philadelphia dispatch reports Thomas Harbin of Braintree Mass drowned after disappearing from the steamship Indiana near Block Island. Authorities believe self inflicted death amid domestic troubles after a telegram from Harbin’s father urged return home with forgiveness.
Thomas Harbin, 82, an Englishman living in Braintree, leapt from the steamer Indian near Boston to Philadelphia, amid belief his first wife in England is alive and that his recent marriage here might be at risk. His mental strain from a past appendicitis operation is cited as a factor. He had married Susan E. Porter a few months before. His sister Mrs. Slade and both women worked in shoe factories in South Weymouth. A note left before his departure hinted at his intention. Police were alerted, with searches in nearby towns. News of his death arrived today.
