The first street car will depart Maverick square at 5 30 Friday morning marking opening of the East Boston tunnel to public use. One hundred fifty inmates fled during a rock crusher detail at Folsom State Prison. A prisoner was shot dead and Guard Jolly was wounded in the cheek after prisoners armed with dirtbags confronted Captain Murphy and Jolly. The guards fired in defense as they attempted to breach guard lines.
Beverly December 29 The schooner Henriettta Simmons of Portland Maine bound home cleared Salem Harbor when her skipper Captain G G Snowdon was struck by a swinging block and knocked overboard off Bakers Island at the harbor entrance He disappeared beneath the waves and despite efforts to tow the vessel a strong wind prevented recovery A tug later brought the ship to Beverly with no sign of the captain.
