Cotton Men Demand Higher Tariff Protection for Textiles
Henry F. Lippitt of Providence and Arthur H. Lowe of Fitchburg testified before the Senate Finance Committee that the Fordney Tariff Bill’s schedules would devastate New England cotton goods. They argued the plan skims only 22 percent protection, ignores fine woven fabrics, and threatens veteran war-built lines with European competition. They urged scrap of the schedules and a new framework to cover all grades and protect dyes in imported goods.
